Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd has never shied away from making predictions. But he went particularly bold with his pick to win the college football national championship this year.
On today’s edition of The Herd, Cowherd had college football analyst and color commentator Joel Klatt on to discuss some of the upcoming games. When the conversation turned to the upcoming Alabama-Georgia game, Cowherd was ready to declare that the 4-0 Tennessee Volunteers are not only the best team in the Southeastern Conference, but will win the national championship outright.
“Those two teams (Alabama and Georgia) aren’t the best two teams in the SEC. I’m gonna call it right now. Tennessee is gonna win the national championship,” Cowherd declared. “Tennessee’s got the best defense in college football. Excellent head coach. Explosive offensively. I think Tennessee is the best team I’ve seen. Tell me I’m wrong.”
Klatt was happy to indulge Cowherd by instantly saying “You’re wrong.” But Cowherd stuck to his guns.
It’s an extremely bold pick given how much the Volunteers have struggled to make an impact in just their own conference, let alone on a national level.
For reference, the Vols never reached the College Football Playoff during the 10-year format of four teams and have not reached the SEC Championship Game since 2007. It has been over 25 years since they won the national title under the leadership of head coach Phillip Fulmer and quarterback Tee Martin.
All of that is besides the point as the SEC is filled to the brim with title contenders who can derail their season before they even reach the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
Do you agree with Cowherd? Would you pick the Vols to win the national title?
