Tennessee is looking for experienced running back depth following the departure of Dylan Sampson, who is heading off to the NFL. The Volunteers are left with DeSean Bishop and Peyton Lewis in the backfield, who each played a good amount in 2024. There isn’t any experience behind them, however, hence the interest here in Thomas.
Thomas ran for 871 yards and seven touchdowns last season for Duke after transferring in from New Mexico State. He averaged 4.1 yards per carry for the Blue Devils, down from his 5.8 number back in 2023 with the Aggies. Thomas also caught 20 passes for 153 yards last season.
The former JUCO product checks in at 6-0, 210 pounds.
Tennessee has been quiet in the transfer portal so far, only adding Alabama receiver Amari Jefferson and Arizona offensive guard Wendell Moe. The Volunteers still have needs on the offensive line and at receiver, in addition to veteran depth in the backfield. They also are evaluating cornerbacks following the injury to Jermod McCoy.
