Josh Dobbs to Jauan Jennings went down in Tennessee lore on October 1, 2016, becoming one of the greatest moments in recent memory during the Vols’ 34-31 win over Georgia. With seconds left, Dobbs spun towards the end zone from the midfield Georgia logo. Jennings leaped above the Bulldog defenders and snared the ball for the improbable win.
The stakes aren’t nearly as high this weekend, but Vol fans could have the chance to see the former duo pull off another impressive accomplishment amidst a lost season for the San Francisco 49ers.
Dobbs will earn the start on Sunday for the Niners against the Arizona Cardinals in the season finale for both teams. Brock Purdy is out with an elbow issue.
What could he accomplish, besides helping San Francisco go into the offseason on a high note? He could help his old Tennessee teammate reach an important career milestone – breaking the 1000-yard receiving barrier for the first time in his career.
Jennings has had to step up into an increased role in 2024 due to the wave of injuries that struck the 49ers this year. Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL in October. Deebo Samuel has had a down year statistically. As such, it’s been Jennings who’s been the standout in the wide receiver room this year. He’s second on the team in catches and receiving yards to George Kittle.
What does he need to make it happen? 77 yards on Sunday in Arizona would put Jennings at 1000 for the season. It’s certainly an achievable feat. Jennings has had 5 games this season with at least that many receiving yards.
And yeah, Dobbs and Jennings know each other pretty well, having played together at UT and having this season to practice together.
The stakes aren’t as high as winning a huge rivalry game. But it would still be pretty neat to see Dobbs and Jennings have a big day together one more time on the field.
