The Memphis Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers were supposed to square off this Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the game has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
“Today’s Memphis-Tennessee game at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Memphis program,” the Volunteers announced. “All tickets will be refunded via the original point-of-purchase, with processing times dependent of method of purchase.”
This was supposed to be a marquee matchup on ESPN2. After all, Memphis has become one of the most intriguing teams to watch due to its freshman duo of Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren.
Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes was eager to coach this in-state showdown. Now, he’ll have to wait and see if this game can get rescheduled.
Even though this Memphis-Tennessee game was canceled, Barnes’ squad will still get in some work this afternoon.
Multiple reporters at Bridgestone Arena are reporting that Tennessee will hold a scrimmage for the fans that made the trip. That’s a pretty sincere gesture by the Volunteers.
Tennessee will be back in action on Dec. 22 against Arizona. It should be a fun game between two programs ranked in the top 25.
