Another week, another SEC team fined for fans storming the field.
Two weeks ago, Vanderbilt got punished when the home crowd trespassed onto the field after a monumental upset over Alabama. Tennessee also watched Arkansas fans cost the program $250,000 by celebrating a 19-14 upset over the Volunteers. Last week, LSU was hit with a $250,000 penalty when fans stormed the Tiger Stadium field following a triumph over Ole Miss.
On Saturday, Tennessee notched a 24-17 win over Alabama. Even though the Vols were a narrow underdog against a past powerhouse in sudden disarray, fans ran onto the Neyland Stadium field.
The following day, the SEC announced a $100,000 fine to Tennessee for violating the access to competition area policy. It’s the program’s first offense since the SEC adjusted the guidelines before the 2023 season.
On the bright side, Tennessee just got money from Arkansas to pay the penalty. The next violation would cost Tennessee $250,000, and any ensuing field storming would yield a $500,000 fine.
A game each SEC needed was plagued by miscues. Tennessee committed 11 penalties and lost three turnovers, but Alabama got called for 15 flags while losing two Jalen Milroe interceptions.
Dylan Sampson powered Tennessee’s offense with 139 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Down 17-14 in the fourth quarter, Nico Iamaleava connected with Chris Brazzell II for the game-winning 16-yard touchdown.
After the win, Tennessee climbed four spots to No. 7 in the AP poll. On the other hand, Alabama plummeted to No. 15.
Tennessee fans shouldn’t storm the field if the Volunteers defeat Kentucky in their next game on Nov. 2.
