The boys are back.
No. 2 Tennessee will open the season this weekend with a three-game series against Hofstra, beginning their defense of the National Championship. The Volunteers have reloaded and rebuilt their roster this offseason, and we’ll get our first look at this new-look team over the next three days.
Liam Doyle will get the start on the mound for the opener on Friday night, Tony Vitello announced earlier this week. Marcus Phillips will get the start on Saturday. He did not announce a Sunday starter.
Tennessee is still waiting on word from the NCAA about new first baseman Alberto Osuna. The former North Carolina Tar Heel ended up going the JUCO route, but now should have another season of eligibility following the Diego Pavia ruling.
The Volunteers will move on to face UNC Asheville on Tuesday before hosting Samford next weekend. They have another midweek game against North Alabama, before heading to Houston to play in the Astros Foundation College Classic. They’ll face Oklahoma State, Rice and Arizona during that first weekend of March.
SEC play begins on March 14th.
