The Tennessee Volunteers managed to earn a coveted double bye in the SEC Tournament that gets underway next week in Nashville, claiming the four seed with a win over South Carolina on Saturday in Knoxville75-65.
The Vols had a shot at the 3 seed, but top-seeded Auburn couldn’t return the favor that the Vols gave them last weekend against the Tide, losing at the buzzer to Alabama 93-91 to allow Bama to clinch the 3 seed. Florida earned the 2 spot.
Here’s how the bracket looks.

First, the Vols line up with 5 seed Texas A&M in a possible quarterfinal matchup. That’s not a particularly bad draw, as the Vols handled the Aggies in College Station last month 77-69. Of course, A&M is good enough to take down the Vols if the latter doesn’t bring their best game, but it’s likely a better matchup than 6 seed Kentucky would have been, who swept the Vols this year.
That’s if A&M gets past their Thursday matchup. Vanderbilt and Texas will do battle first to see who takes on the Aggies in the second round of the tournament. The Commodores gave the Vols all they could handle in both matchups this year, which the teams split. The Vols beat the Longhorns in Austin this year 74-70.
Tennessee, if they advance to the semis, would face in all likelihood top seed Auburn, with a possible championship matchup with likely Florida or Alabama. We’ll see what happens when the tournament gets underway on Wednesday.
