The Tennessee Volunteers moved up in the college baseball polls on Monday morning after a strong showing in Houston over the weekend in the Astros Foundation College Classic tournament. Tennessee swept Oklahoma State, Rice, and Arizona over the weekend to improve to 11-0 on the season.
The sweep pushed Tennessee back to the top of the mountain in the Baseball America poll. It did not do enough for D1 Baseball to put the Vols there, as Tennessee came in #2 with LSU #1.

The snub by D1 for the top spot left a bad taste in some UT fans’ mouths on Monday morning. The Vols have hit more than 20 home runs this season than the Tigers and don’t have an ugly loss on their resume like the Tigers do with a 5-4 loss to Omaha. Still, D1 felt the Tigers deserved the top spot, so the Vols have a little bit of free early season fuel to play with.
Tennessee made quite the statement over the weekend at old Minute Maid Park (I’ll always call it that, personally). The Vols slugged ten home runs over the three games while dominating on the mound. They got past #25 Oklahoma State 5-2, blasted Rice 13-3, and topped Arizona 5-1.
Freshman Levi Clark has been a revelation for the Vols, and he showed why he’s one of the best young players in the country. He hit home runs #4 and 5 in the team’s wins over Rice and Arizona and now his hitting an NCAA best .600 in the early stages of this young season. That’s obviously not sustainable, but it’s incredible that a true freshman can come in and rake like this so quickly.
Next up for Tennessee is Radford on Tuesday in Knoxville.
