Last weekend, Alabama posted the biggest win in college football, beating No. 2 Georgia 41-34 in a thriller in Tuscaloosa.
The victory boosted the 4-0 Crimson Tide into the No. 1 spot in the AP top 25. If you were wondering how they would handle being No. 1 under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, the answer so far is not well. Alabama is currently down 23-7 on the road to Vanderbilt.
The 2-2 Commodores jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a touchdown run by Sedrick Alexander and pick-6 by linebacker Ranon Fontenette. Alabama settled down and drove 75 yards for a TD of its own to trim the deficit to six points, but another Alexander touchdown and a long field goal have put Vanderbilt back up by 16.
At the moment, Alabama is facing its largest deficit against an unranked opponent since a 20-3 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 2, 2004. That’s 20 years ago, and at the time, the Crimson Tide also weren’t ranked.
If Vanderbilt springs this upset today, it would be one of the most shocking results in not just the annals of the SEC, but the history of college football in general.
Alabama is currently driving with the ball in Commodore territory right before the half, and the Crimson Tide have plenty of time to assert themselves and leave Nashville with a W.
The longer Vanderbilt stays in front though, the more intriguing this game becomes.
