Former Xavier and Louisville head coach Chris Mack is the early favorite to replace Stackhouse. He recently said he wants to get back into coaching, and his daughter committed to play volleyball at Vanderbilt in April of 2023.
“I think he really wants it,” one industry source said of Mack.
Stackhouse, the former NBA veteran, went 70-92 over five seasons and never made an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Stackhouse’s best season came in 2022-23, where he led Vanderbilt to a tie for fourth place in the SEC with an 11-7 record. However, it still wasn’t enough to make the NCAA Tournament. Stackhouse and Vanderbilt appeared in the NIT twice (2022, 2023) and lost in the quarterfinals both times.
Stackhouse came to Vanderbilt with tons of NBA coaching experience, including as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors (2015-16) and Memphis Grizzlies (2018-19), as well as head coach of the 905 Raptors G League team (2016-18). He won a G League title with the 905 Raptors in 2017 and made the finals again in 2018.
Vanderbilt’s 2023-24 campaign was ended on Wednesday by losing to Arkansas in overtime, 90-85, in the SEC Tournament.
This story will be updated with official comments from Vanderbilt.
