Mason McTavish is beginning to live up to the expectations of being a third-overall selection. His consistent offensive contributions have been promising in an otherwise up-and-down season. What really stands out is the development of his shot, especially his blistering one-timer on the power play.

Speaking of shooters, Cutter Gauthier had a slow, snake-bitten start to the year, but has come on lately. He has seven points in his last six games. His versatility and scoring touch have been invaluable to a team that has struggled to score in recent years. Sam Colangelo, despite only recently being called up, showcased his potential with five goals over a four-game stretch. His net-front presence and ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities have not gone unnoticed. Putting these three together is one of the best coaching decisions Greg Cronin has made this season, which was evident when they combined for seven points against the Edmonton Oilers.  ​

This youthful line has injected energy and optimism into the Ducks’ roster. McTavish’s leadership qualities position him as a future cornerstone of the franchise. Fans have embraced this trio, coining nicknames such as “The Kid Line,” “Mac and Cs,” and “GMC” to celebrate their impact. It would be wise for the Ducks to keep this line together and see if they can continue to build chemistry this season. Hopefully, that carries over to next season as well. ​

Watching McTavish, Gauthier, and Colangelo play together draws parallels to the formidable line of Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Rickard Rakell. That was a trio instrumental in the Ducks’ division championships and deep playoff runs from 2013 to 2017. McTavish’s vision, shot, and leadership mirror Getzlaf’s influence as a central playmaker. Gauthier’s goal-scoring prowess and ability to agitate opponents are reminiscent of Perry’s style. Therefore, making him both a scoring threat and a player who can get under the opposition’s skin (and hopefully draw some penalties).  Let’s hope Gauthier is a bit better at staying on his feet than “The Worm.” Although, Perry’s propensity to fall did endear him to some fans. Finally, Colangelo’s proficiency around the net and his knack for converting chances align with Rakell’s reputation as a reliable finisher. Rakell and Colangelo are players who find themselves in the right place at the right time, showcasing their hockey IQ.​

Looking Ahead for the Anaheim Ducks and their Young Forwards

For a week there, it looked like this line may be able to inspire the team to go on a run and sneak into the playoffs. That’s nearly a mathematical impossibility now. MoneyPuck has the Ducks’ odds at a whopping 0.3%.

While the Ducks face an uphill battle this season, the development and performance of McTavish, Gauthier, and Colangelo provide a foundation for optimism. Their growth not only offers hope for a return to playoff and cup-contending form but also serves as a reminder of some of the franchise’s best players and lines. ​
