The Titans owner is excited, again, about a new GM
Amy Adams Strunk has been the Tennessee Titans controlling owner since 2015. Mike Borgonzi, who the Titans hired yesterday to be their general manager, is her third GM to hire following Jon Robinson and Ran Carthon. Each time AAS has released a statement about how excited she is about the new guy. Here is what she had to say about Borgonzi (via tennesseetitans.com):
“During Mike’s 16 years in the league, he has been a key part of transforming the Chiefs from a two-win team to a three-time Super Bowl champion,” Brinker said. “During our meetings, he articulated a clear plan to build a championship standard in Nashville through consistency, discipline, and hard work. I’ve admired him for many years and I’m thrilled to add him to the team as our general manager.”
I said last week that I wasn’t going to get excited about anything with this team until I saw wins on the field. Then, this news came out and I got excited again. Borgonzi is a well respected personnel guy around the league. People said the Titans weren’t going to be able to make a good hire because the general manager job here didn’t come with final say. Those people were proven wrong yesterday – well at least partially.
We don’t know how Borgonzi will be as the general manager. The Kansas City Chiefs have certainly been the model franchise for the last few years, but he is not going to have Patrick Mahomes or Andy Reid here. Those two guys are certainly the biggest reason the Chiefs have been as good as they have been.
With that being said, he at least had a hand in drafting Mahomes who certainly wasn’t a no-brainer franchise quarterback when the Chiefs traded up with the Buffalo Bills to select him with the 10th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
And, it’s not like the Chiefs only have Mahomes and Reid. There are a ton of talented players on that roster. Now, he gets the chance to build something from the ground up in Tennessee. His first decision will be what to do with the number one overall pick in this year’s draft. Is Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders the next franchise guy? If they believe that one of them is they should absolutely take him. If not, the process changes to trying to move back in the draft to pick up more picks because while this team’s biggest need is a quarterback, there are plenty of holes that still need to be filled up and down the roster.
Ian Rapoport called the decision Borgonzi has to make “monumental”:
