Between the upcoming draft and free agency period, there are a lot of NFL rumors flying around these days.
On Thursday afternoon, one emerged on X/Twitter, via the NFL Rumors account.
“Something to watch : Tennessee Titans DeAndre Hopkins could look for another team next season on a mutual parting of ways,” the tweet read. “Hopkins came there with Mike Vrabel and his former OC with the Texans, both are now gone. D Hop would have a $16.4M cap savings if cut with June 1st designation.”
Hopkins himself responded to the post, calling it “cap” and untrue.
The 31-year-old wide receiver signed a two-year, $26 million deal with the Titans last summer. His cap number for 2024 is $18.3 million; the Titans would save $10.4 million by cutting him before June 1 and $16.4 million by making it a post-June 1 cut.
Of course, if Hopkins is telling the truth, Tennessee could also opt to keep him. After all, the five-time Pro Bowler played in all 17 games in 2023, catching 75 passes for 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns.
“I feel like it was decent, wasn’t bad, but I knew the kind of offense I was coming into — a run-first offense — and I just wanted to come out and try to help these guys win,” Hopkins said of his performance this year, according to Jim Wyatt. “I knew I wouldn’t be targeted like some No. 1 receivers are targeted on certain teams… But for me, to have 1,000 yards, if you play a lot of football, you know that’s hard to do, especially in a run-first offense.”
