A lot of good information on Mike Borgonzi in today’s Monday Morning Quarterback
Albert Breer says the Tennessee Titans “hit a home run” with the hiring of Mike Borgonzi as their general manager in his Monday Morning Quarterback column this morning. There are a lot of good details in the article about the Titans process and Borgonzi’s role with the Kansas City Chiefs over the past eight years. Breer says that Borgonzi was part of a “small decision-making circle” in KC that included general manager Brett Veach, coach Andy Reid, and SVP of football operations/strategy Chris Shea. One of the decisions the Chiefs made in that time was to draft Patrick Mahomes.
The article mentions that Chad Brinker spent 45 minutes on the phone talking to Veach. It also says that Brinker talked to people who worked for Borgonzi with the Chiefs. Paul Kuharksy has taken some flack for his reporting on Ran Carthon sleeping on the plane, but one of the things PK said about it was that it had an effect on the people who worked for Carthon more than the people that Carthon worked for.
Breer also says in that article that Borgonzi “will oversee coaching, scouting, sports medicine, sports performance, and player development, and have final say on the roster.” The Titans have told us that Chad Brinker will have final say on the roster. Hopefully, that will get clarified for us when Borgonzi has his press conference.
There is no guarantee that Brogonzi will be successful here. We have gotten excited about a lot of moves over the years both on the field and in the front office that ultimately ended up in failure. With that being said, you cannot find a person who has any knowledge of Borgonzi and his role in Kansas City who doesn’t think this is a great hire.
