In his first season with Father Ryan, Mettenberger served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, leading the team to their most successful season in the past nine years. His quarterback, Joseph Derrick, had a breakout year, throwing for over 2,400 yards and 26 touchdowns.
“Coach Mettenberger brings a wealth of experience to Father Ryan’s football program from his time as a standout collegiate player at LSU to his career in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans and his transition into coaching,” Father Ryan principal Francisco M. Espinosa Jr. said. “His passion, leadership, and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly strengthen our program, and I am excited to see its continued growth and success under his leadership.”
This is Mettenbergers’ second go-round at Father Ryan, having left after the 2021 season for a short stint coaching for Nick Saban at Alabama. He now becomes the eighth former member of the Titans who is coaching football in and around Nashville.
Mettenberger was a sixth-round pick by Tennessee in the 2014 NFL draft and immediately saw the field as a rookie. In all, he started 10 games that season, throwing for 1,412 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was released in 2016, finishing his Titans career with 2,347 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
