Changes continue to cascade throughout the Tennessee Titans organization this offseason.
Not only has the team taken a new direction by completely reorganizing its front office staff and making multiple changes to its coaching staff, but it is also going to have some new faces on its training staff.
Todd Toriscelli, the vice president of sports medicine, is retiring and saying goodbye to his 35-year career in the NFL. A prominent figure in sports medicine and a highly respected member of the staff, he has come a long way from his days as a steelworker.
The longtime member of the Titans organization shared some thoughts with Jim Wyatt before departing the organization.
“Being a head trainer for 35 years, as much as I’ve enjoyed it, it’s just time for me,” Toriscelli said. “I’ll be 64 in a month, and we work about 90 hours a week during the season. People keep asking me what I am going to do, and I honestly don’t know because I’ve never been able to do anything.”
The Titans hired Toriscelli as their director of sports medicine in 2014 after 17 years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was named vice president of sports medicine for the organization in 2022 and honored with the 2022-23 NFL Outstanding Athletic Trainer of the Year Award.
Prior to entering the NFL in 1997, he spent seven years as a head athletic trainer in the college ranks, split between Stanford, Miami (Fla.) and Kansas State.
Although he is saying goodbye to the Titans and the NFL, his presence will still be felt across the league. Six current NFL head athletic trainers got their start working under Toriscelli, and his techniques have influenced many other training departments.
Veteran trainer Matt Gregg, who joined the Titans nine years ago, will be promoted to replace Toriscelli. Gregg has spent the past six seasons as associate head athletic trainer, working alongside Toriscelli.
