The first quarterback domino of the offseason has fallen
The Tennessee Titans were never involved in the Matthew Stafford sweepstakes, but the fact that the veteran quarterback has decided to stay with the Los Angeles Rams is a good thing for them. The reason it matters is that, if the Titans do want to trade the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, they need to have as much competition as possible for the pick. Had the New York Giants traded for Stafford, it would have been very unlikely they would want to trade for the number one pick.
The Giants are reportedly now turning their focus to Aaron Rodgers. The difference between the Giants’ situation and the Titans’ situation is they have both a coach and a general manager who need to win next year or will be fired. The Titans have preached patience over and over this offseason. The new general manager, Mike Borgonzi, certainly doesn’t feel pressure to win now. There have been conflicting reports on how Chad Brinker and Borgonzi feel about head coach Brian Callahan, but it’s hard to see a scenario where Callahan is fired after 2025 if the team makes good progress.
Rodgers feels like more of a short-term plug than Stafford, so if Rodgers does end up signing in New York, it wouldn’t necessarily mean the Giants wouldn’t want to trade up to number 1.
It is just under two weeks until the new league year begins. There will be a lot more action that takes place that should provide clarity for the Titans’ options with the top pick.
