The new Titans general manager speaks to the media for the first time.
The Tennessee Titans had two press conferences today. The first was just with President of Football Operations Chad Brinker. That was not filmed, and Brinker said a lot of the same things that he said on the radio this morning. So much of the dialogue around this has been centered around the structure of the Titans’ front office. Brinker reiterated that all decisions will be made as a group.
The second press conference was with new general manager Mike Borgonzi. That one was filmed. You can watch it here. Borgonzi said he believes in Chad Brinker 100% and that Brinker was one of the things that attracted him to the job. He also smiled when he said that having the first overall pick and around $50 million in cap space was attractive as well. Borgonzi also went on to say that they want to be a draft and develop team that supplements in free agency. He talked about making sure that free agents they bring in are going to be the right fit from a leadership perspective.
Of course, he was asked about the quarterback position. He said that it is arguably the most important position in all of sports. Getting quarterback right is the most important thing to determine whether or not he has success in this job.
Some other quick hitters:
- “Draft picks are a great form of currency.” Said the team will look for ways to trade back and collect more picks in certain situations
- Borgonzi said he’ll have full authority over the free agency and draft process
- Like every other GM, talked about how building the fronts – both offense and defense – will be a priority
- He joked that some of the congratulatory calls he has received since getting the job felt like feelers for the number one pick
It is also important to note that Amy Adams-Strunk was not at the press conference today. She was there when the team introduced Ran Carthon two years ago. Brinker said this when asked why AAS isn’t talking:
Chad Brinker on why Amy Adams Strunk won’t speak: I don’t have any answer. #Titans
