Will the Tennessee Titans make a splash in free agency?
The Tennessee Titans’ new regime has said they’ll build the roster through the draft as opposed to splurging in free agency like the previous decision makers did. Despite that, the Titans possess the financial flexibility to make splashes in free agency. Over The Cap currently projects them to possess roughly $36 million in effective cap space. More space could arrive via restructures or veteran releases.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen and Jeremy Fowler recently compiled a list of the 50 best pending free agents. The Titans possess direct ties to four of the top 10 ranked players. They are as follows:

Tee Higgins (No. 1)
The Titans have been tied to Tee Higgins dating back to last offseason when he requested a trade away from the Cincinnati Bengals. Higgins is a Tennessee native. Head coach Brian Callahan was his offensive coordinator. Callahan’s offense needs a “X” boundary receiver after trading away DeAndre Hopkins. If he reaches the open market, he could be a target.
Trey Smith (No. 2)
Kansas City Chiefs right guard Trey Smith is among the most dominant blockers in the league. He played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers. New Titans GM Mike Borgonzi was in Kansas City when Smith was drafted in the sixth round. Tennessee’s offense desperately needs an upgrade at right guard.
Charvarius Ward (No. 8)
Borgonzi was also in Kansas City when Charvarius Ward was signed as an undrafted free agent. He’s since played for the San Francisco 49ers. The Titans aren’t going to spend money on a cornerback. They still have L’Jarius Sneed and Chido Awuzie under contract, and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. performed admirably as a rookie.
Josh Sweat (No. 10)
Philadelphia Eagles pass rusher Josh Sweat is returning from an injury to play in Sunday’s Super Bowl. Sweat is a pending free agent and the Eagles have drafted replacements such as Nolan Smith. Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson previously coached him in Philadelphia. The Titans have a big-time need at EDGE.
Other notable players on the list the Titans possess ties to include safety Jevon Holland (Reggie McKenzie), safety Tre’Von Moehrig (Dave Ziegler), offensive tackle Cam Robinson (Nick Holz), Milton Williams (Wilson), Haason Reddick (Wilson), Nick Bolton (Borgonzi), Malcolm Koonce (Ziegler), Mike Hilton (Callahan), and Justin Reid (Borgonzi).
