The Titans had a plan at punter
Adam Schefter is reporting that the Tennessee Titans have agreed to a 1-year fully guaranteed contract with former All-Pro punter Johnny Hekker. This comes mere hours after it was announced that they would let Ryan Stonehouse test the free agent market. Hekker was with new Titans special teams coach John Fassel with the Los Angeles Rams.
Hekker turned 35 in February and has been in the league since 2012. He was with the Rams from 2012-2021 and with the Carolina Panthers since 2022. He is a 4-time All-Pro and a 4-time Pro Bowler.
Obviously, this was the guy Fassel wanted punting for him this season. Stonehouse has a huge leg, but there were issues with his hang time that the coaches talked about at different times last season. Hekker is a veteran that should be able to execute what they want to do more efficiently.
Hekker has also attempted 26 passes in his career going 15 of 26 for 193 yards and a touchdown. Maybe he is the competition for Will Levis that Brian Callahan talked about at the end of last season!
