I still get goosebumps every time I hear the call
Let’s step away from all of the current drama with the Tennessee Titans to reflect on the fact that today is the 25th anniversary of the Music City Miracles. That is a special play in the history of the NFL, the franchise, and especially around here. A shout out to my wife who came up with the name for this site almost 20 years ago.
I’ll never forget that day as long as I live. I’ve told the story here before, but I was a senior in high school that year. The Friday night before the game our house got broken into. They really trashed the place while they were there. We hadn’t gotten everything cleaned up as the game started, so we stopped to watch the game.
It’s hard to explain the buzz around the city about that team. It was their first year as the Tennessee Titans. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing a ton of people wearing Titans’ gear, and they were all anyone was talking about. Man, I would love for that to happen again.
Anyway, it wasn’t a very exciting game until the end. When the Buffalo Bills hit that field goal with 16 seconds left, the reality of everything in the room around me started to set in. Then it happened. Christie kicked it high and short…you know the rest. I remember jumping up and down while Kevin Dyson was running down the sideline and high-fiving my dad. Then I remember tracing a line on the TV screen trying to figure out if it was a lateral or not. Despite what Bills fans will say to this day because they don’t understand geometry, it was a lateral.
That moment became even more special as the Titans went on their run to the Super Bowl ultimately coming up one yard short.
You can here Mike Keith’s iconic call of the play here.
The ABC TV broadcast here.
Mike Keith also did a cool interview with Kevin Dyson about the play that you can watch here.
What are your memories of that day?
